According to global offset experts, Basilicata region in southern Italy has a population of 600000 and consumes more than 3000 GW hours of electricity every year. It has announced plans to achieve self-sufficiency in power supply by increasing the renewable energy capacity by more than five times to 1600 MW by 2020.
 
At present, half of the energy demand in the region is generated by natural gas and oil fuel power generation facilities. The regional authorities told global offset experts that they have formulated new energy plans for the whole region.
 
"We want to achieve self-sufficiency and go beyond self-sufficiency. The new energy plan is betting on renewable energy," regional president Vito de Filippo told reporters recently in the regional capital Potenza.
 
De fillipo went on to say that the new plan will increase the installed capacity of 1000 MW of wind power in Brasilia Kata, which is sunny and windy, on the basis of the existing 200 MW.
 
According to Massimo Scuderi, general manager of SOCIETA Energetica Lucana, a wholly-owned energy company in the region, the region will increase the solar power generation capacity from the current 60-70 MW to 300 MW.
 
Global offset experts also learned that the new plan includes the development of hydropower and biofuel power generation facilities.
 
The region also intends to invest $52.35 million in incentives for renewable energy, more than $100 million in improving energy efficiency and nearly $40 million in research on innovative energy technologies.
